RWTH Muscat, a new University for the Sultanat of Oman. RWTH Aachen (Germany)
The RWTH Aachen plans on founding a branch university in the Sultanate of Oman. The location is approximately 50 km outside the capital Muscat in the Batinah plain, directly on the coast.
Viewed from the main road in the interior, the campus is easily distinguished from its surroundings by a clear green edge, similar to the appearance of an oasis.
The set-up of the campus internal structure derives from the traditional Muslim urban structure, where starting from the main and central, development with mixed use functions for the hole community, such as the Mosque and the Suq(market), the building structures will differentiate ever more clearly from public to private as one moves from the fringes. Individual dead end streets make access to the living quarters (clusters) thus creating social neighbourhood networks for its inhabitants.
This project design interprets this system. The core of the campus is the forum with centrally located assembly hall bordering the water and surrounded by the other representative university buildings.
From this centre the building development continuously differentiates itself radially in function and use. The internal linking of the campus is by a widely ramified system of trails and walkways with general functions located at their intersection. The green concept is characterised by individual subspaces (typical Arabian gardens) and creates buffer zones.
Starting with three the campus may grow to up to five faculties. All functional zones have areas for future expansion at their disposal.
