House of silence – a studio building. FH Aachen (Germany)
awareness of light and sound
In the perception of sound arises the consciousness of silence as the finiteness of sound. Each place is experienced via sound, differently than noticing the place with the eyes and will be experienced in a distance, while perception of the area happens by hearing in the area. In the motion of light forming pictures of the area lies the consciousness of time and finiteness and the circulation including day- and nightrythm.
Topic of the thesis (diploma) is the art-theoretical discussion with the emotion of silence in art and architecture, as well as the translation of these thoughts and feelings to images of space-, light- and sound into an architectural projects a place of silence.
The theoretical part analyzes special art trends, whose understanding intoduce in the practical part. Developed is a house of silence as studio building connected to the abbey Saint Benedictusberg in the vicinity of Vaals/Netherlands.
The house serves as a place for meditation and the retreat for humans, who work artistically and want to step into examination with themselves. Part of the architectural discussion is the occupation with the architectural theory "the architectural space" from Hans van der Laan.
The house is created, which was designed using light and sound for the whole walk pass. The way into the most intimate place of this house – the cell - corresponds with the way to our own inside. The twilight at the entrance, the way through the rhythm of light in the hall of concentration, a narrow gate leading to the room of silence – a dark room connected via the motion of light with the “own” garden, the water and the sound of the outer rooms as part of the outer nature.
The picture "of the internal house", the small door and the stairs there, are sketched as internal places. The cell is the place of the dawn and introduces the silence of the night and the end of the day.
