Habiter les (mi)lieux, du public à l'intime. ULG Liège (Belgium)
The city of Liège has commissioned a study aimed at clarifying their choice in terms of development. In February, we started working on proposals on architectural interventions in the Longdoz district located southeast of the city center, between the Meuse and the Chartreuse hill.
We started by rethinking the neighborhood collectively. The objective is to determine how to live in the city, in the broad sense (urban housing, culture, education, commerce, public space,...) and make it desirable.
The parcel we work on is a transition place between the city and the neighborhood life. It hosts the museum of public transport and a primary school, defining it as a cultural centre.
Currently, this neighborhood has no green and public space. Our priorities is to put the collective dimension at the center of the project and to propose collective moments at different scales within the project.
Firstly, we create a green path along the boulevard in the continuity of other green spaces created throughout the district.
Then, the implantation of the various buildings stems from the desire to create several public spaces that put the school at the center of the project. There’s a mineral square and a collective garden, both left to residents and students’s appropriation. There’s also a square linked to the museum’s activities. The status of the road is redesigned, it’s coating indicates that cars have no longer priority there.
The collective dimension takes also place within the buildings. Especially through the provision of collective rooms, a cafe, workshops, roof terraces and roof gardens. In addition, the access to accommodations is via passageways designed as meeting spaces, large enough to leave room for appropriation.
The project offers different types of housing, ranging from 1-bedroom apartments to 3-bedroom duplexes, thus bringing together different profiles of residents.
