On the specified site located in the north-west corner of the Volksgarten in Cologne, an ensemble of structure parts and open spaces is to be designed to provide space for a planned exhibition on the history of landscape gardening.

The analysis of the surroundings indicates the directions from which the streams of visitors will arrive, the sides onto which the Volksgarten opens out, and the important axes.
While the Volksgarten gradually dissolves on the Volksgartenstrasse side and connects with the city, I would like to give the “city“ the chance to merge with the park along the Eifelstraße.

Starting from Eifelplatz and continuing up to the rose garden, I am developing an irregular comb structure using shear walls, allowing the exhibition areas to be arranged both under a roof and in the open air.
Set -in gazebos of different sizes provide space for various uses.
The rear gazebos, connected at the top by a canopy on the comb structure, accommodate functions such as the foyer, multimedia research opportunities, administration and restaurant.
Basic information on the history of landscape gardening is exhibited by information boards and models in the connecting part of the comb structure, and is arranged in 4 theme areas.
The respective theme areas are demonstrated more clearly to the visitor by practical examples in the theme gardens.
Exhibition gazebos are positioned at the end of a theme garden.
They serve both as a showcase and a vantage point.

Viewed overall, the design spreads out completely in the horizontal and forms many different architectural intermediate spaces.
I have taken the trees worth preserving into consideration.
The gazebos are positioned at locations where the tree population allows.
The shear walls are erected on individual footings thus not touching the roots.
The backbone of the building is formed by the shear wall standing slightly back along the Eifelstraße. It contains the comb structure and forms a clear finishing point.
