FRANÇOIS LURQUIN
Rural Adaptability. ULG Liège (Belgium)
This project is implemented where agricultural activity is still present in the village. Its implantation aims to recreate a public space linked to this activity. It structures the roadway in order to expand it, sometimes towards the small square, sometimes towards the market gardening.
This project offers the village collaborative workshops mixed with a sustainable development house. These two programs would never have a typical day. They would live from day to day, being able to welcome all kinds of users or activities. The youngest as well as the most experienced would meet there, and would transmit their knowledge and know-how to each other. To do this, the spaces must be as versatile and flexible as possible. This is why I chose to organize the spaces around servant volumes, making them free by submitting a hierarchy between them.
The sustainable development house being the main focus, it must be a direct witness of what sustainable architecture can be. Like a farm that is expanding to accommodate more cows, this project would be integrated by phase into the village, in proportion to the activity present at that moment. It would adapt to the needs, while taking into account the means of the project owner. It would grow at the same time as the village. This phasing would subject the project to a controlled growth. Inserting it in this way would give it time to integrate as well as possible, and ensure it the best sustainability and adaptability. Sustainability is possible if the flexibility lasts over time, until anticipating a loss of intensity of the main activity. Each stage would have its own independent structure reinforcing versatility, allowing it to adapt to different activities by appropriating the space as needed, opening or closing them. It would allow a possible re-investigation of the place, through another program, ensuring the building’s continued efficiency for the village over time.
