School as living space. RWTH Aachen (Germany).
Concept & Pedagogy
The design is based on the fundamental ideas and guiding principles of Maria Montessorie pedagogy, which sees the school as an educational place of diversity. Individual abilities, skills and strengths of the children are to be promoted. In doing so, they are encouraged to build their own personalities and to develop curiosity and joy in learning. The goal is to educate students to become confident, critical, and responsible members of society.
The school is entered via a centrally located gatehouse. A pergola forms an intermediate space and access passage around the courtyard to the individual buildings. It forms the threshold between closed and open space.
In the structure of the school estate there is a hierarchy of 'more public areas' to 'more private areas'. Thus, the gymnasium, the technical and administrative rooms, and the building for afternoon care are oriented towards the street.
In the middle zone, are the more private class houses and in the third zone, which is also the mediating area between the school and the retirement home, is the community house.
Two grades always form a cluster. They jointly access their classrooms through a gatehouse, where the checkroom and hourly WCs are located. The classes consist of a large open space that provides room for collaborative and individual learning and a terrace that serves as an extended outdoor classroom for individual learning in appropriate weather. The common center of the cluster is a 'garden', which is located behind the gatehouse.
There are four clusters in total. All of them together form a large cluster, whose large communal center is the schoolyard. A Cluster within a cluster.
Projects, which take place under the motto "Young learn from old. And old learns from young." are intended to bring the residents of the retirement home and the children together and also create a stronger sense of community throughout the neighborhood.
The use of the school by clubs and other institutions after regular school hours opens up the school as an institution to the neighborhood and the urban space.
The design, wants to give children the space in which they can develop freely and self-determined.
