“Zwischenwelten”. FH Aachen (Germany)
Task:
“Zwischenwelten” is created for the 5th XELLA students' competition. An approx. 800m long bridge from Duisburg Rheinhausen to the opposite Rhine-park should be planed.
The primary utilization of the bridge should have been attractive housing units, as well as a pedestrian crossing between the two waterfronts.
Site
Duisburg is the core of a megapole pulled by enormous forces since all times. In the past it growth because of the needs of heavy industry, undermined over and under ground, cossed by traffic routes. In the change from an industrial location to a service sector great challenges have to be solved again. Old industrial ruins have to be eleminated or converted, and the treasures of the past have to be saved for the futur.
Building
There are different atmospheres at both sides of the river, “Zwischenwelten” tries to intermediate between those to different situations.
In order to this fact and to avoid the progressing gentrifivation in modern metropoles, the building is organised like a autonoumes environment, similary to a city district.
A Visit
The visitor enters the bridge on the middle deck and is soon led up to the top deck or promenade. In the towers it is possibility to get to the other decks and levels or directly to the riverside. In the East the promenade ends abruptly in 27m height over the Rhine park.
Structural engeneering and form in consequence
The structural engeneering and the design are built in unit. The building consists of three interweaved main decks which form a space frame. The spaces between the interweaved decks, the meshes, are filled with the different utilisations. All decks are composed of triangular and/or hexagonal frames. The attempt is to prevail the border between floor, wall, and roof with one structure that forms all components.
