In Vienna, six anti-aircraft towers are located. They represent the only preserved buildings of their kind beside two towers in Hamburg. The Vienna towers were constructed from 1942-44 to protect the city and the population from aerial bombardment. They are valued as the most authentic relicts of National Socialism in Vienna because of their constructional dominance and location in the city.

My project concerns one of the two unused anti-aircraft towers that are situated in the Vienna Augarten. In this specific tower, a World War II Museum is planned. The necessary additional buildings are arranged below the ground in order not to disturb the tower’s monumental effect. Thus originating a visible border between the tower and the new underground buildings. With its massive architecture, the tower represents the monumental and the dark time. In contrast, the new buildings focus on the filigree and light. Overall, the aim of this project is to define a focus that does not contradict the historically emotional background of the anti-aircraft towers.

The most important part of my design is a route configuration through the museum complex. The intention is to create a three-dimensional connection between the tower, the underground buildings and the park. A long stretched way delicately immerses under the earth and impinges on the underground building in a patio. Thereby, the axis of the route is deviated. It proceeds through the buildings complex up to the vertical development at the tower which leads to the towers highest levels. Leading downwards through the tower and the underground buildings, the tower is left behind together with an impression of darkness and seclusion.

The design contains many emotional impressions, unexpected views, a most important a contrast between monumental and filigree effects, darkness and brightness, and closed and open space.
