Rituals
Space for everything and for nothing
The RWTH-University needs premises for different ceremonial, festive causes. The universal room should allow adaptation and use of different events. It can be the centre of the universities cultural activities. It`s imaginable that it offers an adequate frame for readings, concerts, graduation ceremony or exhibitions.
Site
The site is currently affected by heavy contrasts. In-between factory buildings, different institutes, a nice park and a laminar acre the building is intended to be situated. To the north the lot is protected by a densely wooded hill. The university intends to expand. The sketch is expected to become a central solitaire of the new campus expansion.
figure
In my opinion less can be more. Therefore the sketch is limited to few architectural elements. The room is plain and simple but also impressive. Symmetry and the base cause the effect of transcendence. The material of brick, the simple entrance situation and the undefined scale establish a connection to everyday occurrence. The base grounds the building. It includes the serving functions. The hall is made of a plenty of thin tubes that wrap the big, emty, column-free room. There is just one big wall dividing the hall. Therein are two elevators and necessary technical installations. During events it gives a protecting back to the stage. The seating are simple wooden stools that are reversible and determine the room just temporary.
