Neue Parteizentrale Bündnis90. RWTH Aachen (Germany).
The rise of "Bündnis90/Die Grünen" to a people's party requires a better visibility of the party in the Berlin urban body. The new party headquarters is therefore intended to be a significant building block within the development of the last wastelands site in Berlin's government district.
The 2.4 hectare site, named Luisenblock Ost, is located directly on the Spree River with a view of the Reichstag. The site, which has lain fallow since reunification has experienced a variety of successive uses over time. In their simultaneous overlapping, we see the possibility for a diverse, multi-layered and green urban quarter that radiates the spirit of green politics beyond the building structure. The new quarter shifts the focus from the city as a functional body made subservient to man to a place of high biodiversity that can stand against the climate crisis.
The party headquarters of "Bündnis 90/Die Grünen" is the architectural expression of a green world view. The building sees itself as an urban building block with a pizzeria on the groundfloor and a hostel on the upper floors. The floor plans are flexible and reusable, allowing for easy adaptation to the group dynamics of the party leadership as well as for its subsequent users. The greened buffer zone serves as a situational extension of the interior space, making climate changes tangible for employees. Also, it is used for building temperation. The construction method is the result of an extensive investigation into the sustainability of the production and raw material procurement of various building materials. The structure consists of a slender reinforced concrete skeleton with infills in brickwork to reduce the amount of solar heat gain and generate storage mass. Thus, the new party headquarters of "Bündnis 90/Die Grünen" represents a lively and adaptable urban building block for the new quarter.
