REVITALIZATION OF THE PALAZZO DEL LAVORO AS A NEW PUBLIC SPACE
The project aims to reconnect the citizens of Turin with the Palazzo del Lavoro, a significant urban landmark commemorating the Italian centenary of 1961. Despite its historical importance, the structure has deteriorated over time, becoming an urban obstacle rather than a source of pride. Its current state generates visual discomfort, particularly for those entering the city from the south, where the building’s decay is most prominent. Revitalizing the Palazzo by transforming it into a permeable space that invites community engagement could greatly benefit both the Nizza Millefonti neighborhood and the wider city. The project envisions converting this symbol of past progress into a new emblem of community spirit and active citizenship.
The Nizza Millefonti district, currently lacking in public spaces and green areas, stands to gain significantly from this transformation. Much of the area is dominated by extensive railway tracks, vacant land, and the former Fiat factory site. Parco Italia ’61, the district's largest green space, is also compromised by private areas within its boundaries and is isolated from the Po River by the Corso Unità d’Italia road. The Palazzo del Lavoro, in its current state, blocks access to the park from the south. This project seeks to redefine the relationship between the Palazzo and Parco Italia ’61, treating the building as an integral part of the park rather than a separate entity. By integrating the Palazzo into the park and enhancing its accessibility, the project aims to create a cohesive urban space that better serves the needs of the local community and contributes to the revitalization of the area as a whole.
