Gewerbe - und handwerkshof neues klöpperhaus Hamburg. RWTH Aachen (Germany)
For a long time, those urban typologies that are characterized by a mixed use and can therefore have a preventive effects against economic and social inequality of neighborhoods, have often been overlooked in the process of urban planning. Moreover, start-ups, new and long-established small enterprises are often pushed out of the urban area, because they are no longer able to stand up to the displacement process.
The fact that this development has negative consequences for urban development is shown by various symptoms. Hartmut Häusermann, a sociologist and urban researcher, has repeatedly found in his research, that cities whose economic foundation is primarily shaped by the tertiary sector, show a stronger social polarization, than those cities that still have a solid industrial fundament. The different time horizons of the existing building which is the subject of this project and located in the heart of Hamburg have set in motion a typological transformation process from which the city can benefit today.
The implementation of an hub for urban manufacturing within the existing building of the "Neues Klöpperhaus", opens up a perspective for a new kind of urban economic activity: circular, socially inclusive and with local wealth generation. The draft contributes to the debate on urban manufacturing and seeks an answer to the familiar question of how to combine different uses under the same roof.
The hybrid building concept is based on already well-known typologies. The typologies of the „Hamburger Kontorhaus“ and the „Berliner Gewerbehof“ served as key models. Thanks to an efficient internal organizational structure, both horizontally and vertically, the draft meets the complex requirements of the existing building and opens up a universal perspective for the conversion of large-scale existing buildings as a contemporary work and production space.
