H2Ouse – Canoe Cubes. FH Aachen (Germany)
The Soča river is one of the most breath-taking wild rivers in Europe – its water is crystal clear and of dazzling turquoise. It has its source at the foot of the mountain Travnik of the Julian Alps and has a length of 140 kilometers, entering the Adriatic Sea to the west of the city of Trieste.
Thanks to the special location of the Soča river the climate is very mild both in the spring as well as in the late summer. It gained nation-wide publicity due to its turquoise colour which comes from the elutriation of the mineral spring rocks.
Canoeists can find any level of difficulty from the narrow flume to the two broad river valleys. It will hence meet the demands of both beginners and wild water pros.
In order to meet the diverse demands that arise when wanting to offer hostels and accommodation near the water as well as the precise specifications of the Slovenian river Soča we need a system that is as self-sustaining as possible and that doesn’t affect nature too much. Furthermore, one should be able to build and deconstruct the system at any point in the world.
That’s why I created a modular system as a basis for accommodation cells as well as for a huge water sports centre applicable at any location. According to demands and size you can build an individual structure from this building set. Elemental parts of the concept are enhancements and the possibility for a complete deconstruction.
The basis of the girder is a module of steel tubes linked to each other with a diameter of 60mm each. Thus, a star-shaped structure is formed. If combined, it makes up the girder of the cubes. Each end of every module has a mounting thread so that another module, guying, railings, sunscreening or the foundation can be fixed.
Since the size of each unit allows for an unproblematic world-wide transport the single elements and cubes can be built regardless of location and according to the later users’ desires before the units are built. Thus, the construction effort on site and the demands for executive craftspeople is as little as possible
