Magnetic Fields – Reuse of the Central Bus depot in Praque 6, Czech Republic. RWTH Aachen (Germany)
The former bus depot is situated at the northern periphery of the town. An articulated outskirt, implied by the topographical formation and the star-shaped urban plan by Antonin Engel characterizes the area. The north-south axis connects Praque Castle and Engel town gate adjacent to the depot.
The new instated use of the depot built in 1932 and the adjacent site comprises the Technical Library of Praque University and student accommodation. All elements of the composition are linked by a central raised walkway, leading from the city in the south to an abandoned railway track acting as public transport junction. This walkway connects horizontal and vertical circulations within the development.
The dimensions and proportions of the 69.90mx68.10m free spanning roof structure of the depot forms the principal of the cartesian design and organization. The construction grid of 2,85mx2,85m resp. 2,85mx4,50m and the bays the main trusses forms the grid of construction and organization in plan and elevation of the proposal.
To retain the open space of the depot the Library is organized from walkway level down.
The bay on the east site of the depot comprises studio spaces, entry area and service. The sunken shelving system, comprising reading area, service counter auditorium and mediatheque is tight together with two axes perpendicular to the main walkway.
The 60 student apartments form six double towers, based on a 5,70mx5,70mx5,70m grid, situated in line with the eastern bay. The cubical units are constructed of prefabricated r/c panels with opening towards the east and west, insuring natural lighting and cross-ventilation. Central lifts and steel grating staircases form the circulation and bracing.
The double height units for two students are characterized by a central core, comprising all services and a mezzanine floor.
