New Fine Arts Museum in Lausanne. ISA Saint-Luc Liège (Belgium)
That may be important to specify beforehand that the “nouveau Musée des Beaux-Arts” of Lausanne was realised as part of the extension of the collection contained in the existent Museum of Beaux-Arts, a collection mainly build around the works of four Swiss artists : Gleyre, Soutter, Ducros et Valotton.
One of the most notable characteristics of the building stays in its interaction with the outside. Indeed, the first intention was to create a introvert museum, that can be read from outside as an monolithic element, like a roc gushed out the ground and sculpted in the mass, integrate in its environment but developed in height to create a sight related to the town and the lake.
This project purposes an access to the building after crossing trough a dense vegetal space that products a sensitive contrast with the public space, where the entrance takes stand. Moreover, the museum is situated on the banks of the lake, a second continuous access allows the link to the existing promenade that offers a resting place, as a remarkable landmark characterised by the fact of is high situated area.
Inside the building, the neutral character of the exposition spaces gives the opportunity to the art works to fully express themselves. The building is composed by a central space where different adjacent rooms collide. The inner circulation, based on the discovery of major painters, has been designed on a spiral shape, in order to create a visual contact with the patio. To follow the cohesion of the collection, we will finally find a room with a specific scenario dedicated to each artist, designed in function of the art works and their context.
