Terroir Mosel. RWTH Aachen (Germany)

Every wine is the reflection of its origin and the place, the terroir. In the architectural design, the terroir is reflected by the expression of the form, the materiality as well as by the interaction with the existing buildings. The winery is situated in the middle of the historic and listed village centre of Ediger-Eller. On the Moselle, work, life and building have always been shaped by viticulture, the narrow valley and the constant danger of flooding.

The aim is to blend sensitively into the historically evolved village centre and to complement the winery. By relocating the production facility to the outskirts of the village, the shop and the guesthouse can be strengthened in their existing form. The already existing guest house will be faced by another new building, which takes up elements of the existing building. It fits into the surroundings as if it were a matter of course and yet stands out through its materiality and openings. The inner courtyard and the public passage connect rooms as well as alleys and are themselves lounges.

In addition to the exhibition that accompanies the passage, different "wine rooms" are created that support the enjoyment of wine in different ways. The ground floor forms an open area where outdoor and indoor spaces as well as covered and uncovered areas merge. Towards the alley, the new building presents itself very regularly and naturally extends the course of the alley. Towards the courtyard, the regularity of the openings is played with. The newly inserted material of rammed earth, together with the wood, reflects an authentic local atmosphere. In combination with the function and form of the two new buildings, the design blends sensitively into the townscape, complements the existing ensemble in a meaningful way and puts the experience of wine at the centre.
