Lee Profile

Brüder

Max Taut and Bruno Taut were brothers.

Brothers who painted while travelling, who wrote letters to each other. Brothers who were very close to each other.

Brothers who both made architecture. And yet  rothers who were very different.

The name of the quieter and more introverted of the two brothers, Max Taut, unlike Bruno Taut, was somewhat forgotten after his death.

Just like the Reutersiedlung in Bonn.

The Reutersiedlung is a post-war housing estate designed by Max Taut in the 1950s. The history, closely connected with the post-war history of Germany, the qualities in the park-like green space, urban bodies and movements in space, effective floor plans, restrained accentuated facades, but above all the composi- tion of many different building structures and types make this settlement special.

The aim of this thesis was to complement the large Reutersiedlung family in the city of Bonn with seve- ral new buildings and extensions that should harmonise with the existing buildings and with each other. The planning resulted in seven new brother types and many smaller brothers, creating new and more versatile living space, communal areas and more defined green spaces without destroying the character of the existing settlement.

The Triplets (die Drillinge), the Tilted Brother (der Schräge Bruder), the Twins (die Zwillinge), the Fat Bro- ther (der Dicke Bruder), the Big Brother (der Große Bruder), the Hairy Brother (der Haarige Bruder), Bruno and Max are the names of the new brothers of the settlement.
