Aarhus, port on the east coast of Denmark, developed in 1900 to a small city. In this development the harbour played an important role. The area where my fascination and the ingredients arise/come together lies around this harbour area. Important is the movement between university, city and harbour.
After investigation it seems that the northern part of the city is better developed than the part south of the river the Aarhus Aa. The movement caused by the university can explain this. A movement of 50.000 students between the centre and the university.
In contrary the southern part of the centre has not developed so quickly and various. Here there was only one movement, the movement to and from the train station.
By changing the role of the old railway repair station to the program parts: film theatre, film academy and housing for students, accessible to a large target group, namely students, a new direction south will arise. Also the area will act as connector between the centre and the housing area which lies south.
Central are the 3 different users, which are the cause of the new movement:
Passenger
Visitor
Student/inhabitant
Of importance for a wide and continuous movement is that these 3 groups meet each other during the “use” of the area. By mutual influence, the user will be tickled which will cause an interaction between the, in first instance, different movements.
By “directing and informing” the users by means of the design, this confrontation will be strengthened. This confrontation will be strengthened on different graduations.
During the process of the design there has been searched for parallels within other profession areas, particularly within the medium movie. Examples are Tarkovski, Lynch and Tarantino, directors who, among other things often use the theme confrontation in their movies. Pulp Fiction belongs to the last mentioned director:
1 movie about 3 stories, which in first instance do not relate to each other, but during the movie confront and influence each other.
