Euregional Centre for Track and Field Athletics “Waldstadion Aachen”. FH Aachen (Germany)
Aachen is supposed to play part in the German Association of Track and Field’s interest to develop new centres of competitions. A Euregional centre for German and foreign athletes shall be installed here.
The base for this development is the possibility to train at the stadium the whole year.
It is necessary to build a trainingcenter containing a specific sports hall with additive functions like bathrooms, changing rooms, a gym, rooms for coaches, a restaurant and a new roofed grandstand at the stadium to arrange bigger competitions.
The trainingcenter takes the existing axis on and is situated parallel to the main direction in the western part of the arrangement.
A new direction builds up in the back of the building and increases its dynamics without getting in conflict with the old system. The slopping of the roof and the cantilever underline the dynamic appearance.
Interiorwise the athlete is focused on the glazed wall in the south by largely closed sidewalls. Through diagonal windows visitors are attracted by interesting views.
The additive functions are installed next to the hall.
In terms of the entrance square the concept gets into a relation to the existing buildings considering length and height in a second building. The square is now bordered by the new building at its western side, yielding into the new part.
By crossing a gate you arrive at the warm-up and throwing-field, which is designed in a kind of patch-work-style. The new sitting-sculptures that are as well situated at the entrance, are designed in the same manner.
The lightly reflecting façade of the trainingcenter is emphasising the building’s light and modern character.
The grandstand is separated by the centre and integrated into the existing mound. and is a part of the existing.
