Development of an urban component reuse center on the site of the Humboldthallen in Cologne-Kalk
Objective
The project aims to develop a programmatic and design concept for a building component reuse center at the Humboldthallen site in Cologne-Kalk. The design seeks to raise public awareness of circular building practices through clear use definitions, functional hybridizations, and integration with urban usage. Architecturally, it will showcase the constructive and design features of using recycled components, positioning the ReUse Center as a real laboratory for its own challenges.
Issue
How should the processes and uses be designed to make the ReUse Center a public interest building? Should it follow an existing typology (e.g., recycling center, IKEA) or adopt a new one? How can it serve as a real laboratory to communicate the benefits of component reuse and increase public acceptance?
Design
The site, located in the former industrial area of Cologne-Kalk, offers the opportunity to repurpose derelict spaces like Humboldthallen 70/71, abandoned since 2016. The design divides the 209-meter building into two open-air halls by dismantling the central axis, creating a central hub. The ReUse Center occupies the west side, with access through a vestibule leading to a central foyer connected to the new market hall, Forum. The southern section houses delivery and acquisition areas, while a social tract with offices faces Dillenburger Strasse. Reusable components are cleaned, repaired, and sold, with key materials including PVC shingles, cellulose insulation, and reclaimed wood.
Hall 71 integrates additional public uses, including a daycare center, youth hostel, cultural center, and local workshops. The central roof structure connects these spaces, creating a public mezzanine and forum.
Conclusion
The ReUse Center serves as a model for reusing industrial sites, combining material production with public engagement. Its „Transparent Manufacture“ integrates the community into the sustainable urban development cycle, turning the center into a real laboratory for circular construction.
