German Embassy in Tokyo. FH Aachen (Germany)
This design is intended for the 2000 competition from BBR, and comprises a new chancellery of the already existing German embassy in Tokyo. My work refers to the entire estate; it includes the apartment and residence of the ambassador. The demanded programme has been satisfied both in terms of space and function.
Position
The area, situated in Minato-Ku/Tokyo, comprises 14,500 m². The highlight of the area is a Japanese garden with special terrain conditions.
Base of design
As it accommodates a person of authority, the embassy requires specific functionality and safety precautions. Furthermore, as it represents the country, it embodies a certain consciousness. I deem the experience and dialogue of cultures, and thus the free movement of visitors, to be particularly important for this location.
Description of design
Starting from a stone foundation, the subject of subtraction and addition has been treated with strong horizontal references. The characteristic feature is a courtyard, the opening of the Japanese garden for visitors, and also the analysis of the terrain conditions.
Chancellery
This basic element of the complex has four floors. The public and functional entrances are situated on the ground floor, as well as the opening of the yard and the Japanese garden. The administration is situated above, and is opened up at that point. This is also the main entrance. Parking spaces are underground.
Residence and apartment of the ambassador
The residence is the location of the bulk of activity and represents the whole. The reception area and driveway are located on the main entrance level. Its form is determined by a horizontal, and ends up in a vertical building, which embraces the apartment of the ambassador. The change of function from public to private has been made visible.
