The world’s population is expected to undergo an exponential increase to an estimated 9 billion people by 2050, while urbanization in developing countries accelerates. The world’s expected increase in subsistence demands necessitates additional agriculture capacity approximately the size of the Brazil. To fulfil this dramatic increase with limited space, “vertical farming” is a viable solution.

There are two phases of “vertical farming” development as a global phenomenon:

Prototype A: The goal of Prototype A is to transform the theoretical concept into practice, structurally and financially. The geopolitical location choice of Prototype A should serve as a far-reaching platform to build awareness for “vertical farming” across the world, beginning with other major metropolises.

Prototype B: The focus of the second phase will be the maximization of food production. Key locations for prototype B include densely populated areas and conflict areas.

FR¬_75-A consists of two towers, powered by solar energy, wind and biogas.

Tower 1: The primary function is research and development for improved production. The main component centres around a modified high-rise storage area for hydroponic plant production; lab boxes are situated here.

Elements connect the storage to the public. On the lower level, there are a café connected with foyer and park, while an I-box bridges young and old. The conference and seminar areas are located on the upper level. Above the high-rise sits the restaurant with panoramic views of Paris.

Tower 2: The focus of the second tower is the maximization of production, and does not include additional elements from Tower 1. The high-rise storage consists solely of plant boxes which can be docked and de-coupled by rack feeders. Each clearly identifiable box is supplied with light, water and co² via distribution channels which can be adjusted for particular conditions, such as temperature or gas supply, via remote control.
