Pavilion plane tree
The property is located in the Rhine meadows of Bonn on the left side of the river Rhine.
The aim is to create contemporary architecture in the immediate sphere of modern cultivation like Post Tower, Federal Ministry or Telekom which are the main employers in this area.
The new planning should contain identical functions like those of the existing pavilion.
Because gastronomy and conference rooms are highly demanded in this area the new building should achieve an enlargement of the rooms.
In addition, a day-care centre should be integrated into the planning.
The concept of the building is based on a fallen plane-tree leaf, discovered during the analysis of the location.
During the decomposition process, the plane-tree leaf developed an abstract form which served as a model for the appearance of the building. The colour change of the leaf during its decomposition depends on time and weather relations and is a feature that should be shown in the building by the material choice of copper on the surface.
Furthermore, the colour of copper is similar to the rusty colour of the fallen plane-tree leaf.
The facade of the building shows the typical cell structure of a leaf and has a bearing function.
The idea of the form of the separation of the three functions arose from the construction of the plane-tree leaf which exists of three leaf cloths.
The unevenness on the edge of the leaf was the inspiration to design an open uneven roof surface and enable a higher natural lighting of the rooms in the planned building.
The location and the view should be optimally used.
To ensure this, the building is oriented southeast to achieve a perfect lighting and an unlimited view to the Siebengebirge.
