Conceptional formulation / Site
Conception of a building for appartments and trade and commerce on the site between Dasselstrasse, Zülpicher Strasse and the Railroad embankment in the southern "Neustadt" of Cologne, regarding the facets of noise protection and reasonable supplementation of the existing building development. The site is located at a semi-circular square at Zülpicher Strasse. To complete the building development and to round up the square are the main aims of this project.
Elements
The base next to the existing houses continues with their building line. It contains solely space for trade/commerce. A second base towards the square is planned on the boundary of the site and closes the square in relation to the existing buildings. Above this base stands a freestanding and detatched cube with flats on the upper three floors. The "bar" contains 8 different typs of flats and maisonettes. It is made accessible by three staircases, breaking down the long "bar" according to the smaller units of the historic lot sizes in the neighbourhood, and access balconies facing towards Dasselstrasse. The two-storey building located anlong the railway embankment contains solely introverted maissonettes. The sound-proof wall spans the ensemle. It folds at the south end of the site and runs back above the base at the square and into the ground.
Noise protection
The maisonettes of the "bar" on 1. and 2. level, the kindergarden and its rink are protected by the sound-proof wall and the two-storey building. All appartements above 2. level are protected by integrated winter gardens or glazed terraces.
Construction/Material
The whole building is made of reinforced concrete based on a 4 meter grid. Cladding materials are bricks combined with plaster. The base facing the square is coated with light natural stone.
