Art-Hotel Graz. RWTH Aachen (Germany)
The task was to design a 5-Star-Hotel including studios for artists. It is situated in the old town of Graz and is supposed to be a new element on the Graz “axis of art “
. The concept is, to create a private and exclusive world where both –guest and artist- can meet. Therefore the building is defined by two areas:
The public and “transparent” groundfloor, with reception, exposition, gastronomy etc and the private world in the upper three floors where guests and artists meet and where they work and live together. This form of symbiosis is achieved through a flexible room system:
Each room-module has a wooden “service-bar” which contains bath, toilet, kitchen and a cupboard for the mobile bed. Inner and outer facade aswell as the aluminium skin (sun- and sightprotection) consist of mobile vertical pivot hung elements which allow different degrees of transparency. This way every room can be hotel-room, studio or exposition space:
After an artist has been using a room as a studio, he leaves behind a personal piece of art which gives the room an individual character and so the next guest can enjoy the piece of art and studio-atmosphere that has been created. If the room is not occupied, it is opened and sofore becomes –with the piece of art - part of the exposition.
The area in the middle can be freely used as working, exposition or lecture space. The constant “arriving and leaving” of guests and artists cause a permanent movement of the room composition and atmosphere, which is also visible in the facade. The hotel gives the artist the chance to expose himself in a new and more direct way, as for the guest, he can experience a new intimacy with the artist and his art.
