AGLAC – Aachen Global Academy. RWTH Aachen (Germany)
The further training of highly qualified senior staff in economic enterprising has become big
business. Universities scramble to offer their apprenticeship through special courses and seminars
in exchange for money.
To this end, RWTH-Aachen has founded the AGLAC (Aachen Global Academy), which enables an
interdisciplinary offering of education. This institution has remained a “virtual platform” and has as
yet no building of its own.
The theme of the diploma thesis is to design, in Aachen, an academy building for AGLAC. The task
is to develop a vision as to how RWTH-Aachen can present itself to the outside world and how it
can set itself apart in the city of Aachen.
Among two alternatively real estates, I chose the one in the centre of Aachen.
The main programme embraces four different parts:
The rooms of the academy / eight “seminar blocks”
- Lyceum for 200 people
- Administration
- 24 “rooms” for lecturers and servitors
The new academy transforms this programme into a vertical organisation principle:
The “Seminar Towers” are made available by a longitudinal split and the “Habitation Towers” by a
cross split. The foyer level, stay level, respectively, extends along the entire length of the building and takes
on a street character, where the exchange can take place.
The “habitation, seminar parcels”, respectively, the ”individual“ areas, extend across the entire
width of the building.
