European Spaceport
It’s been always the vision of mankind to travel not just within the boundries of the world but beyond that, to reach out of space. Since the small step of Louis Armstrong, the tourist-industry is preparing to enable this vision: holidays out of space. In the near future space-fairies shall be affordable and ecologically reasonable.
The first european spaceport is located at the currently inoperative airport of Berlin Tegel/Germany - in the center of Europe. The central location facilitates logistic advantages and represents the idea of proximity to the urban population. It’s infrastructure includes all requirements of an international airport.
The aim is to attract a broad audience, visitors and travelers, young and old, fun or knowledge seeking people. Therefore we bring space on earth and install an adventure zone in the basement of the spaceport. Here the audience can watch, participate in trainings and improve their space-related knowledge.
The inner structure of the spaceport and its construction reflects and evokes the emotions of a space-travel. The visitor experiences in different rooms of the facility a variety of atmospheres and attractions.
The choice of material and inner-structure conciliate a futuristic impression of a time-machine. The entrance already arises the feeling of time traveling and accessing new spheres. The illumination transports the idea of dissolving boundaries. The mainly overhead light concentrates light channels and directs the attention to the spaceport-body and outside into the sky.
The construction is divided in two main areas: public (including the adventure zone) and staff. It’s transparent construction enable active and passive participation, so the areas are not completely separated from each other and promote the communication between staff and visitor.
The whole airport building embodies with its skin-like surface, the natural form and a constructive inner-life a organic space-corpus.
