Remigius Gnetner
Therme am alten Klinikum, Aachen. FH Aachen (Germany)
Topic
The main challenge was the conception of a thermal spa on the site of the former clinical centre.
The aim was to create a plan for a building, providing swimming pools and a relaxful atmosphere for approximately 100 up to 200 guests.
Location
Despite an individual areal progress on the landscape, - finding the appropriate premises was essential.
A central location in the Aachen Area is offered by the premises of the former clinical centre, which is still maintaining a quite and restful charm.
Architect’s Plan
The premises and its new architecture are based accordingly on this background information.
In my point of view it was preferable to keep the original and natural form of the park as far as possible.
This lead me to the decision to match the planned building on the areas topography.
The thermal spa is vaguely perceptible for its guests, because it goes into the ground with its sites jutting out.
Thermal spa is connected with its landscape enhancing each other with their harmony.
The building has parts that differ in structure, height and in their exposure to light which creates an individual entity and atmosphere in each part.
Its orthogonality and the position of the two large pools make it not too difficult for guests to pass through the inside of the thermal spa. This is where the water flow is crystallising out as a source of inspiration.
Credo is architecture’s radical diatonic with its strong, diverse and rhythmic scansion….
