Imperial Abbey Kornelimünster

Kornelimünster is situated south-east of Aachen in the Inde valley. The heart of the town is the former abbey church. Its grounds are divided from their surroundings by a wall and house a five-winged baroque building, the main building of which contains a museum.

Uses

The Academy has three functions: the Academy located in the wings of the baroque building, the musical theatre in a modern construction, and flats for students and lecturers in the medieval part. Musical Theatre The Musical Theatre consists of two main bodies: the stage and the audience area, which meet in the stage area. They follow and visualise the axes of the spatial environment. The baroque forecourt is bordered on the south side by an avenue. The new construction and the medieval building naturally enclose the forecourt.

The stage window allows interesting settings, facilitates the transportation of sets, and rehearsals can take place in daylight.

The Academy

The Academy is within the wings of the baroque structure. Entry is via the glass foyer, which connects the baroque building with the Musical Theatre. Rooms for general use are positioned centrally by the foyer. Rehearsal and class rooms and a multi-purpose hall are on the top floor. The functional rooms are ideally situated for performances directed towards the inner courtyard. The Green Room is situated in the arched cellar, which is connected underground with the new building and the rooms serving the stage.

Materials

In terms of its proportions, the new building fits into the overall setting. Its clean, cubic, sealed glass and Corten steel construction provides a suitable contrast with the plaster and quarrystone of the other buildings. The Corten steel façades blend nicely into the inspired atmosphere as a result of their irregular and naturally weathered surfaces.
