„National Stadium Warsaw“. RWTH Aachen (Germany)
The project is based on the candidature of Poland for the holding of the European Football Championship in the Year 2012. In this context the City of Warsaw decided to replace the existing stadium used by the well known soccer club “Legia Warsaw” by a new stadium which meets the current guidelines set by the UEFA.
In contrast to monofunktional stadiums the new concept develops a multifunktional component to fit in the city and create public space also generating public life that does not depend on certain events. Therefor the Idea of a sportspark developed, distinguishing itself by the mix of various sporting facilities, and is supplemented by gastronomy, shops, office space, a hotel and last but not least by a high quality city landscape.
This new city component connects two eminent areas of Warsaw, the Lazienki-Park in the southwest and the Vistula in the east. The connection between the open spaces is accomplished by developing the park towards the Vistula across the traffic routes. The addition of different sporting areas and the corresponding tribune generates the image of a folded landscape integrating the football stadium.
To enlarge space and function additional space in forms of sports halls and arenas are created beneath the surface of the landscape. They are modelled by the imprint of the sporting areas on top. Two tribunes together form the roof of the facilities underneath. These are dominated by the formative element of the concrete walls in longitudinal direction. On the on Hand they bear the load of the landscape and the tribunes, but on the other they structure the spaces under the sporting landscape.
This concept leads to a effective use of the roofage, integrates the stadium as a mulifunctional component und adds the sporting landscape to the city.
