A meeting place for recreation and relaxation along the Albert canal in Hasselt. PHL Diepenbeek (Belgium)
From an urban development point of view, it is part of an interesting network of moving lines and structures. Three canals run through the area and discharge into the Albert canal, where they result in important buildings.
The newly constructed canals combine a series of interesting residential areas, with semi-public outdoor spaces in a fascinating play of panoramic openings, free-floating terraces and green zones. Via metaphorical stepping stones along the new canal, which are embedded in the residential areas, you are led towards the forum for recreation and relaxation. The building clearly forms a point of orientation in the surrounding area. A present cycle - and walking route is also included in the building as a recreational axis and furthermore it is reinforced by means of green areas. A yacht-basin has been linked to this route.
The new canal will also be used for aquatic recreation.
The project itself has an extensive and complex programme. On the one hand, it provides opportunities for all kinds of sports activities, but on the other hand there is also room for catering industry and other recreational facilities. As a result, it is a construction in three volumes. An austere straight-lined volume strengthens the direction of the new canal, at right angles to the Albert canal and accomodates all additional functions. It also structures two other volumes : a sports section and a catering section shaped like a harbour master’s office : a little tower watches over the yacht-basin and with its free-floating terraces it points at the city centre. The sports volume is a continuation of the gentle recreational square, next to the building. By means of glass it shows its internal activities. A giant climbing rock can be seen in the shop-window.
