Hof für Kultur und Kommunikation – Stadreparatur in Aachen-Burtscheid. FH Aachen (Germany)
Location: This project was designed for Burtscheid, a district of Aachen, which is characterised not only as a health resort but also by its University facilities and its schools.
Generally speaking, there is a marked separation between the residential and the leisure-time areas, although it is plain that with full use of availabilities at hand, more activity and a number of different kinds of projects could be developed.
The submitted design for a Communication Centre is based on the knowledge that for pulsating town life, a connection between culture and social services is far more important than in their separation.
The plan: The aim is to create a place for common interests, in which exchange of information and education for different age groups can be held at a permanent site. Harmoniously arranged around the public square, various uses are to be found in the buildings: private (eg. for festivals), open (eg. café) and public (eg. adult education).
Design: Three building objects are grouped round a courtyard. Each building has its individual form, height and alignment, through which it is suited to the relatively high buildings in Gregor and Kleverstrasse as well as to the humble back-yard environment. At the same time, the ensemble is a conscious self-contained unity (amongst other things, because of ist recurring elements, such as lamella structure, concrete and glass). The only possibility for entrance to the buildings lies in the courtyard, and so the courtyard binds culture and communication.
Studio-house for Students: The need is due to the nearby university. Each of the full-time-open floors is 100 m² for workroom, tea-kitchen and lavatory. In the basement lie the rooms for Network and Plotter.
Seminar house: The rooms are orientated outwards, to be used according to need (eg. for computer courses). In the basement are two rooms for administration, a foyer and a showroom. On each of the top floors are four seminar rooms (2 x 30 m² and 2 x 80 m²) for choir practices etc.
Café – Bar: In addition to the public Café-Bar, with its terrace to the Courtyard, lies a multi-purpose room (100m2) for private festivities, performances and concerts.
Altogether, the aim is to achieve a harmonious mixture for users and for people of different age-groups.
