5000m wohnen – Stuttgart Sequenzen. RWTH Aachen (Germany)
Task of the project is the change of use of a railway track in Stuttgart. With the realization of the project “Stuttgart 21” this track will be shut down and therefore becomes subject for urban development. The 5000m distance track begins in the valley of the town centre and ends in a recreation area southwest of the city. The air space above the track is to be utilized for living while the track is to be maintained as a public way for pedestrians and cyclists.
In my project the space of the track is determined by “furnishing” the landscape (with urban design objects up to buildings) which divides the track into sequences with different densities and qualities. For the track, the buildings become furniture.
Parameters for positioning the buildings are distance to the neighbourhood, access from existing streets or traffic junctions, orientation into the green and far views. In between, there are sections free of buildings. Depending on topographical situations, the houses border at different levels on the track. In some sections the track is used as access to the buildings, in others the buildings hang above.
Residential sequences consist of three different housing types. The houses fit into the green slope at the side of the track. As there is “no site”, the buildings touch the earth lightly. They are connected to the street or respectively the track by footbridge.
Because of the extreme location at the slope, the exterior space assigned to the houses is integrated into the typology. Courtyards, terraces and roof gardens divide the buildings and create different relations. The living areas can be opened by sliding doors. Like this, interior and exterior spaces alternate within the houses referring to the green surroundings and the valley of Stuttgart.
