Reinforced Learning. UHasselt (Belgium)
The project deals with the site that is evacuated due to earthquake risk, and it seeks to find new ways of reusing it. The former usage of the site was a university faculty. So, it is considered that a learning center for community-based earthquake preparedness will be the new function of the site. There are two key aspects: evoking the learning environment in the genes of the site, and showing how a building can be reused even if it has earthquake risk. By using and transforming the existing structure, socially integrated and flexible spaces are provided. Dealing with these aspects in an earthquake-prone city can spark a fire of a new plan that aims to reduce the impacts of natural disasters and reuse the existing building stock rather than tear it down.
As every segment of society will be the user of that institution, integration with daily life is the key aspect of the project. When we look at the context, the building site is located between dense urban fabric and open spaces. There are military structures around the park, which are nowadays used as educational facilities, and our site includes one of those military structures. After it was given under the control of ITU, they expanded the structure with concrete addition. Apart from certain entrance points, the whole facility was surrounded by walls. Walls are removed, and the connections are increased. In those military sites, there was also an intention to create a secondary axis with a linear building to have an inner path that connects the main axis. Thus, main interventions of the project are bringing back the passage between existing buildings and connect it with its surroundings, and provide transparent flexible learning center with using existing features of the building.
