The three blast furnaces and the old bunker are clearly defined and stereoscopic structures in the
former industrial area of Thyssen AG.
The bunker’s solid phenotype makes it become a separating element to the scenery park.
The main subject of this blueprint was to bridge this boundary.
In my opinion, the boundary should be dispersed and defused.
Three different areas were treated to reach that aim.
- implants
- the info centre as a fixed institution
- the Botanic Institute
Defusing the boundary is reached by an arrangement of the implants in the bunker and by an easy
and clear accessibility.
An intersection of nature and industrial fallow emerges.
The former bunker’s phenotype reminds of a case.
The new Botanic Institute turns the elements of the bunker into different „ bowls of fruits“. Soil of
different nutritional value can arise.
The architectural translation is shown in a heterogenic overlap of the strict structure of the bunker
with the implants.
The use of the former control house is changed by the fixed institutions.
The elements are located succinctly in the ‘‘urban‘‘ structure.
When opening the third section of the bunker, the scenery park becomes directly accessible – the
former problem of a dead end alley is solved.
An entrance to the info-centre and an ascent to the exhibition path is the result and the Institute is
opened up.
The cut in the wall at a height of 3 metres realizes the overlap of scenery park and industrial area
without dramatically altering the existing area - the possibility is given to wander about and
discover every section.
Botanic Institute
The observatory has got a function as an eye-catcher and marks the new use of the former
industrial area.
It has an obvious distinct phenotype, so that the existing structure is not destroyed in its unique
character.
