THE FIFTH ELEMENT. RWTH Aachen (Germany)

The Donauisland is a green island, leisure, sports and party island. The culture workshop provides a new element to the island: culture.

Culture is an urban element that defines its architectural demands by non-demands. It is looking for the imperfect, the unfinished and the incomplete. This search, leads to a surface that can be interpreted as a scaffold, a framework for the unplanned and ever changing. If the temporary framework is set as a laboratory, the surface becomes an experiment and simultaneously forms a communication medium. Culture needs surface on the Donauisland. The variation of gradients and continuous surface, expresses a unity and at the same time provides functional solutions. The surface becomes the space and the medium.

Its architectural expression is defined by the desire to interact directly with landscape and people so that they identify with the place and the scene. These conditions provide the catalyst for creativity and cultural development. Creativity requires inspiration from life and its surrounding environment.

The interaction of the varied structures and surface, together with the inspiring island landscape and scenery creates space for cultural development and growth. The surface creates an ever-present stage. There is constant exchange and interaction between the various internal and external spaces. The surface’s unified aesthetic provides the structural stability for the whole building.

The surface can be manipulated. Additional materials, clamps and climbing equipment can be easily added. Painting and spraying the surface is encouraged.

The surface serves as a flexible framework; a laboratory presenting all that is temporary on a single medium allowing the building to be directly changed and manipulated by people and time. The building will evolve, telling stories and adhering to the island’s scene. The surface will constantly change emerging as a cultural collage and yet a continuous surface, a unified building.
