Five Stars – a City Hotel in Stuttgart. RWTH Aachen (Germany)
The present project deals with the contemporary idea of a grand hotel. What defines luxury on the foreseen spot in the heart of Stuttgart?
The site is situated close to the central Schlossplatz – between the Schlossgarten and a shopping area. Animated urban plazas, significant historical buildings and numerous cultural institutions are located immediately to this attractive parcel, perfectly suited as a luxury hotel address.
Luxury is the opportunity for a hotel guest to flee from the busy city into a serene and introvert world – the hotel.
The cavity in the lower building part on the north-west is the only access to the structure’s inside.
Four distinct interconnected and variously deep atriums cut out from the building’s volume generate the inner life.
The ground floor and the first level accomodate service functions, common use areas, gastronomy, spa and a big congress facility. Suites and hotel rooms are located around the atriums on the upper three levels. The corridors connect to the rooms on one side and border atriums or outside facades on the other. The inner courts are attractive vis-à-vis and provide the inner habitation levels orientation while simultaniously creating visual connections between the various functions and levels.
A perforated bronze plate facade veils the edifice’s inside thus boosting the urban retreat effect and transmitting between the inner hotel life and the surrounding city. From a distance, the hotel appears as a sealed volume. At a closer glance the facade curtain schematically reveals the functions behind.
The public areas on the ground level - restaurants, shops and the vaste hotel foyer are left uncovered.
It is not the materiality or just the functionality defining this hotel’s luxury – it is the space variety and the chance for a complete retreat from the busy urban trouble.
