A winery in combination with the wine growers apartment and guest rooms contents two major functions – wine-making and living. The building tries to fulfil the specific requirements of both contents while remaining them legible.
Cellar-body
The usual method, to pump the wine from stage to stage, impairs the chemical structure of the wine. If one therefore wants to influence the quality of the wine, the best way is to create the preconditions for wine-making that works on the gravity-principle. This principle and the aim of temperature-constancy became the basic elements of the designing process. The linear organised production and a required height of 18 meters lead to a cellar-body which is placed around a courtyard. Separated by a joint, in the south-west the living-body cuts into the cellar-structure.
Living-body
Combining guest rooms and the wine growers apartment, its most important quality is the personal relationship. One is guest in the wine growers house. The common room is located in the intersection of these two areas. It strengthens the common functions like breakfast and wine-tasting, open kitchen and reception by concentrating them.
Atmosphere
The cellar-bodies facades are completely closed, the only light enters from above. While the cellar-body focuses on its content, the living-body opens up to the surrounding area, his substance is reduced to three walls.
Materiality
The interior design, characterised by the separation of the buildings structure and the interior furnishing, is limited on two materials. The weight-bearing material is smooth exposed concrete. As a stony but contemporary material it meets the tradition of wine-culture. The exposed concrete with its cool appearance is contrasted by deep-brown wood, which radiates a sense of warmth. Avoiding sensational effects, the building is a subtle and precise answer to the requirements of this specific type of problem.
