’Kulturloch’ – art in Cologne. FH Aachen (Germany)
The Building is positioned close to the post ww2 buildings creating a continuous urban atmosphere. The park like character in front of the Churches is preserved.
Differing landscaping emphasize these two statements. The entrance of the building is connected to a passage way. The interior of the building is derived from the landscape and expresses it's form. The second element of the interior represents the body which is divided into four large halls. The platforms and halls create spaces and passage ways. They represent urban influence in the building. The building offers the possibility of both, private and public functioning space: The halls contain typical stages surrounded by free play surfaces. The passage and the landscape build open-air acting space. Street performances may start in the building. Because of the separation as well as the corresponding organization, a simultaneously use of the spaces inside the building is possible. It is intended that parallel events can take place. The feeling of "City" is reflected in the building.
The art rooms are situated next to the halls and have direct entrances to them and the open air stages. In most of the cases there are additional rooms available. The workshop areas are located on the basement levels and are thereby separated from Visitors areas. The construction material is steel reinforced concrete. The facade, constructed of finished concrete slabs, is a two row frame system.
The interior surface of the ornamented facade is more open than the external surface. Depending on the perspective, the degree of transparency changes. The ornament leaves room for interpretation.
During the day the facade dominates, while at night the activities inside the building are emphasized.
These qualities lend a strong identity to the building. The programmatic content creates a changing appearance.
