Hafencity Universität Hamburg. RWTH Aachen (Germany)
Concept
The site is located in the area of the “Harbour City” project in Hamburg. The specialty about the site is, that it is enclosed by water on two sides. Based on the masterplan from year 2000, the height of the surrounding buildings is estimated 28m. The design picks up the forms of the other buildings and tops them by some few meters.
To distance itself from the main traffic lane, the building settles on the edge to the Magdeburger Hafen and formulates a place orientated to the Elbe river. The Elbwanderweg leads through the site and passes close to the university.
The four faculties (architecture, engineering, geomatics and town planning) divide the building into four parts. The foyer and the entrance are located at the intersection of those parts. To keep the contact between the faculties on all floors, the foyer is projecting itself in higher levels. These neutral zones are versatile in their usability, for example interdisciplanaire corrections, lessons, colloquies and presentations.
The university offers space for more than 60 professors including the students. About 1.500 workspaces are arranged in the building. The design prefers a simple structure, which is able to compensate variable uses and heights.
The students work in 6m high rooms, which are arranged in the outer ring of the building. This arrangement of workspaces is characteristic fort he design and readable from outside. The smaller connection platforms are based on every level and provide both, the horizontal and the vertical connections. To reduce the verticality of these platforms the facade is oriented horizontally. The flowing arrangement of the textile panels allow views to the university as a whole, and the borders between the faculties fade away.
