Within the city centres, one repeatedly comes across plots of land that are not allowed to be built on. Land that offers a lot of potential and that many citizens want to use. Plots of land that are left over in places where one does not necessarily think of housing in the first place.
Currently, we have to deal with the issue of redensification. Affordable housing is more important than ever and living in the city centre has never been more expensive. Everyone should be given the opportunity to freely decide where they want to live. The following project should provide impulses for urban spaces that have fallen into oblivion and are just waiting to be filled with exciting ideas.
The design "Using urban spaces" - Diversity at the Burtscheid Viaduct combines the theme of living in an urban context and communal forms of housing through the combination of a residential tower and a building with communal areas for the residents and the neighbourhood. The aim is to create a vitalising change of use of the parking area
The living spaces in this design have been reduced in order to offer the residents the possibility of expanding their private living space through so-called "switch rooms". This possibility creates a flexible floor plan structure. By minimising the area of the residential units, the residents are given communal areas that are intended to be a response to the wishes of my survey.
In conclusion, conventional housing construction is missing out on many untapped opportunities that building with people could provide. Reducing individual spaces to create communal spaces for the community should be considered more often. Especially to reduce the cost of rental housing in city centres. Such urban spaces could become breeding grounds for exciting and experimental architecture in the future.
