Lausanne’s new Fine Arts Museum is located next to the Leman’s lake, facing the Alpes, surrounded by the CGN’s shipyard and the beach of Bellerive. It becomes integrated into the landscape by repeating a preexisting (medieval parcels) and existing (pier, landing, breakwater) linear shape, which can be read as a clear lamellar print by the landscape and the visitor.

The museum complex streches itself from the city to the lake, from the temporary exhibitions to the permanent ones of the four Swiss painters.

Through its plural functionning, the nMBA reveals itself from inside as a site conceived for the Art, “the walking Art”, the Art that tries to catch the eye of the visitor through a feeling of lonelyness, whereas the outside gives the visitor the unique opportunity to appreciate the remarkable openview.

To stress the simplicity, to concentrate on the content, the nMBA tries to be like the duplicata of the nearby shipyard in order to put these two parts of the territory together and to stress its own stamp within an environment characterized by hybrid areas (industrial and leisure) and the composite shapes of the lakeside.

The nMBA is not designed for one painter but for four personalities coming from different times and movements : the unicity of these artists can be read in the decomposite shapes of this project. However they remain connected : a big entrance hall makes the link between the closed boxes dedicated to each of them.

The idea to keep out of the museum the auxiliaries (cafeteria, bookshop, ticket office) is based on two principles : on one hand, these functions are subordinated to the exhibition, and on the other hand, they create a clear link, a kind of reciprocity between the main building and its surroundings.
