Gluckauf - Bertien van Manen
Parallel to the exhibition, the book Gluckauf will be published, featuring photographs by Bertien van Manen not previously published in book form.
Bertien van Manen grew up in Heerlen, the centre of the Eastern Mining Region in southern Limburg, where her father worked as an engineer for the State Mines. This publication brings together photographs Bertien van Manen took in several mining towns: Wakefield and New Sharlston, Yorkshire (United Kingdom, 1970s), Most (Czech Republic, 1980s), the Appalachian Mountains (United States, 1980-1990s), and Apanas, Siberia (Russia, 1990).
For this book, author Marcia Luyten (Het Geluk van Limburg, 2018) wrote a particularly personal portrait of Bertien, aptly expressing her childhood and her relationship to Heerlen and miners' life.
The book Gluckauf is published in collaboration with Fw: Books and distributed by Ideabooks. The publication is also available in the museum shop at SCHUNCK.
"But it’s incredibly refreshing to see work where you can see how a photographer cared deeply for the people in front of her camera." – Conscientious Photography Magazine
