Architecture and urbanism in times of ecosystem collapse
Corners: from complex design challenges to opportunities for quality
The main cause of the mass destruction of ecosystems and biodiversity is human overuse of land. Market patterns, demographics and footprint continue to grow unchecked. This is about much more than climate. And let's not forget that, alongside agriculture, spatial planning and human activities, it is the second largest source of space use. Isn't it time to make urban planning and architecture (the teeth with which humans eat nature) the last line of defence of "humanfree" space? Is it high time to densify and to give space back to nature? After defining this framework, the lecture will look at how we can contribute in a high-quality way through our architecture, urban planning and, in particular, building blocks and corners.
Leo Van Broeck
Leo Van Broeck obtained his degree in architectural engineering and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy at the KULeuven. For 25 years he was a guest lecturer in architectural and urban design at KULeuven (faculty of architecture and engineering), where he is now emeritus. He was founding partner (2007-2022) of the architectural office BOGDAN & VAN BROECK and Flemish Master Builder from 2016 until 2020. He founded City & Architecture in Leuven and was involved in the creation of the Flemish Architecture Institute (VAI) in Antwerp.
His main focus today lies on the human causes of the planetary ecosystem collapse, and the effect of our economy, our land use, on the destruction of habitats and biodiversity and on the way in which humans shape their spatial presence on earth. Currently, he is chairman of the Climate Experts Committee of the Brussels Region, member of the Quality Chamber of Architecture of the City of Cologne, member of the board of the Sonianforest Foundation and member of the Club of Rome.
