How can the long-neglected multicultural north side of the train station be transformed into a vibrant neighbourhood while preserving its own identity?
By staging the corners with mass, programme and architectural expression, the public space is over stretched, creating a new façade towards the city centre. At least that’s the idea behind Martens Willems Humblé Architects’ development of the Willemskwartier, which Rik will explain in his lecture.
Rik Martens studied at the TU Eindhoven. He worked successively at the offices Jo Janssen Architects in Maastricht, Marx & Steketee in Eindhoven and since 2022 at Humblé Architects in Maastricht. Since 2020 he is partner at this office which is now called Martens Willems Humblé Architects. The office works on the interface between architecture and urban planning and is nominated this years Architect of the Year.
Since 2002 Rik teaches at the Zuyd Hogeschool, Acadamy of Architecture Maastricht, he is currently vice-chairman of the Advisory Committee on Environmental Quality in Heerlen and board member of the Limburg Architects Collective.
