The Passion for the ‘Infinite’ City
The studio of Mathieu Bruls Architect has been based for decades in the Wyck district of Maastricht. In the 1960s, he got to know the region while traveling with his contractor father. That’s when his love for the ‘infinite’ city – and the desire to build in it – began. Since then, Bruls has designed numerous urban plans and buildings, including projects in the Parkstad region.
According to Bruls, society has focused even more on consumption since the financial crisis. For many, the most creative act today seems to be choosing the right brand in the right color. Art has become something we practice dutifully. The role of the architect has also been marginalized, even though it is the urban architect who shapes public space – and thus defines the relationship between the individual and collective authority.

Architecture as a Public Dialogue
Bruls’ inquisitive mind constantly questions even apparent answers. Some of his designs emerge without a client. For him, the profession is so broad that there is room for (imaginary) building projects, furniture, exhibitions, textual reflections, and autonomous artworks. As he says: everything is architecture.
