In the run-up to the 35th edition of the Euregional Architecture Prize (EAP), the second EAP workshop took place this autumn under the title Roots and Roofs. Students from architecture programs across the Meuse–Rhine Euregio collaborated on contemporary questions concerning the role of architecture within a changing climate and landscape.

The workshop unfolded in and around the former ENCI quarry in Maastricht, a place where nature, industry, and imagination come together. Working in tri-national teams, students explored the location and developed their own chosen themes and ideas. The program included a guided tour, lectures by guest speakers David Rademacher (Rademacher de Vries Architects) and Daan Wassen (Made by Saurus), a visit to Bureau Europa, and fieldwork. Together, these components created an intensive and inspiring week full of exchange and experimentation.

Students and lecturers from the EAP-partner universities (AAM Maastricht, RWTH Aachen, FH Aachen, UHasselt, and ULiège) participated in the workshop.

With Roots and Roofs SCHUNCK, in collaboration with the participating universities, is continuing a new educational trajectory that invites young architects to reflect on the significance of architecture in a changing world.

Workshop Results

During the workshop, each tri-national team worked on its own chosen design research project. They presented their thoughts, observations, and reflections in a collective sketchbook and a short film. All the results of the seven team you can find below.
