The Heerlen Rooftop Project Phase 1 - Uit je dak
In 2019, SCHUNCK initiated an international ideas competition for architects, urban planners, landscape architects and designers as part of the Heerlen Rooftop Project.
The response to the competition was extremely special and inspiring: 53 entries were received from 11 countries, covering a wide and brilliant range of themes. From climate, biodiversity, re-use & recycling, entrepreneurship, urban farming and urban gardening to alternative energies and reduction of built matter.
The competition consisted of two parts. In the first part, designers were asked to develop a master plan for seven selected roofs around SCHUNCK in the centre of Heerlen. The task was to use the hitherto untapped potential of the grey roofs for a more sustainable, climate-oriented design of the living environment. In addition, as rooftops are special locations that can offer a new perspective on the city, the condition was set that the rooftops could develop process-wise from a temporary pilot facility (festival) to a sustainable transformation.
Three winners
In November 2019, an international jury, consisting of subject matter experts and business stakeholders (consultants) from the region, selected 10 participants from the field of the 53 submitted projects for a deeper look. The ten selected agencies were each given a personal brief and a fee contribution for the second part of the competition. In mid-January 2020, the study was completed with a second jury moment and the selection of the three winners. Each winning design was awarded €10,000.

The designs serve as inspiration for both the festival and a long-term perspective, impressively depicting what potential lies in the still untapped roofs!

Exhibition
The results of the international ideas competition were presented in 2020 in the exhibition Uit je dak – The Heerlen Rooftop Project at SCHUNCK. The exhibition showcased all 53 design proposals and provided a broad overview of the ideas and themes put forward by designers from eleven countries.
From climate and biodiversity to urban farming, reuse and alternative energy, the designs demonstrate how rooftops can contribute to a more sustainable and future-proof city. At the same time, the exhibition highlights the potential of Heerlen’s largely untapped rooftop landscape.
The exhibition was on view until 30 August 2020 at SCHUNCK Glaspaleis.
