Zonder Titel Van Ge Karel Van Der Sterren

Art piece of the month: Gé-Karel van der Sterren

Every month curator Virginia Hameleers chooses a work of art from the SCHUNCK Collection that inspires her, fascinates her or occupies her in another way. Art that is too beautiful not to share. In the month of March, it is Untitled by Gé-Karel van der Sterren.

"In projects like 'Curator for a day' and 'The selection of', we browse through the art collection together with the participants to arrive at their selection of favourite collection works. It is always special to see which ones are chosen. For her exhibition in the Art Depot, Nancy Nijsten chose one of the first paintings I saw hanging in an unexpected place on the wall in the Glaspaleis during my first working days at SCHUNCK. It immediately caught my eye."

Zonder Titel Ge Karel Van Der Sterren

"It is the painting Untitled by Gé-Karel van der Sterren. The artist often works with exuberant colours and enlargements. For example, in this work we see a close-up of two bare feet, walking through mud. Under one of the feet, a flower - the only flower present - appears to be trampled. But are we actually looking at a close-up? If you look closely, the flower does not appear to be a flower, but a small island, with palm trees. Because, relative to the rest of the image, it is set on the canvas in thick strokes of paint, the little island seems to be squeezed out even between the toes of the canvas. The close-up has turned into an enigmatic scene: something characteristic of Van der Sterren's work.

Curious about the work and Nancy Nijsten's other choices? Her selection is on display now, until Sunday 8 September, at SCHUNCK's Art Depot."
