Each month, a curator from SCHUNCK selects a work from the collection that inspires, fascinates, or otherwise occupies them. In October, gallery attendant Robin is taking on this responsibility.

For this month, Robin Smit has chosen the work Event Two - Detail One (The Carpet Crowd) by Helen Verhoeven. This work is currently on display in the exhibition Selection of the attendants at the Art Depot 3.

Robin: "This painting is a detail from a larger whole, in which themes of power and powerlessness are central. Helen Verhoeven weaves images from popular culture and historical events into her work, bringing them together in intriguing compositions."

Discomfort and Tension

"At first glance, it seems as if we are witnessing a festive gathering: a crowd of figures, some of whom are elegantly dressed. Yet this work raises more and more questions the longer you look. Among the elegantly dressed individuals are strange figures, and there is a palpable tension in the air. The relationships between them are unclear, prompting the question of what occasion has brought these people together. Who are they, and what are they doing here?"
